Interoception is being able to know what is going on in your body. This includes bodily functions like heart rate, breathing rate, hunger, thirst, and toilet needs.
Interoception can be closely related to regulation because knowing how our bodies feel can impact emotions and how we react to our environment. For example, a child who is running at recess may have an increased heart rate. They may even be more aggressive at this time because their body connects an increased heart rate to emotions such as anger, anxiety, and frustration.
Some of the listed activities can help support interoception by connecting the mind and the body. The more a child can focus on how they are aware of their body, this can help influence their cognitive skills.
